The IUCN is an organized
conservational union with members from 140 countries. Originally
founded on October
5, 1948 as the International Union for the Protection of Nature
(IUPN), the name was changed in 1956 to International Union for
Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. In 1990 the name
was shortened to IUCN
- The World Conservation Union. Their work
is made possible by a group of over 10,000 scientists and wildlife
managers currently working on over 500 projects. This "Green
Web" partnership has been active in scientific research
and conservation leadership for over 50 years. These efforts
have made significant inroads to identifying, classifying and
preserving the Wild Cats. CLICK HERE

All Wild Cats are offered protected status
under CITES,
by listing these species in Appendix1 I and Appendix II.
Many
of these Wild Cats are under the auspices of the Species
Survival Commission (SSC) for conservation of species threatened
with extinction and those important for human welfare.
The Species
Survival Plan® Program (SSP) began in 1981
as a cooperative population management and conservation program
for selected species in zoos and aquariums in North America.
Each SSP manages the breeding of a species in order to maintain
a healthy and self-sustaining population that is both genetically
diverse and demographically stable. Complete details of the
SSP can be found in our "PowerCats" Educational Curriculum
covering the Species
Survival Plan.
The IUCN's efforts
are also supported by the World Commission on Protected
Areas (WPCA). The WCPA currently
has 1300 members assuming the task of managing a worldwide
network of terrestrial and marine protected areas. The WCPA
is currently compiling a "Draft Strategy Paper" setting
future priorities for a credible natural World Heritage List
including:
- Artic
- Biosphere Reserves
- Cave and Karst Protection
- Cities & Protected
Areas
- Grassland Protected Areas
- Transboundary & Wilderness Protected Areas
