Here you see a BIG TIGER WELCOME! WHAT A FACE! This is Tundra, TigerHomes female White Siberian Tiger entering the large Tiger Habitat from the relay station. She sets off immediately to explore her territory. You see their beauty but you can actually “feel their power”. It is an incredible and awesome experience to stand before them. Visits are a rare privilege and it is preferred that way since the Sanctuary is private and the animals have peace & quiet with no daily parade of visitors. With TigerHomes Webcams we can watch them all day without disturbing them! Dave recently installed Night Lights in the White Tiger habitat for great evening viewing.
White Tigers have fascinated and intrigued mankind for centuries becoming icons for power & beauty and are often regarded as symbols of purity. Tundra was sponsored and donated to the Sanctuary by Dorsey Levens, of Green Bay Packer fame. He gave her the name “Tundra”, or so we thought for their home range of the Siberian tundra but found more recently it was for the Packers frozen football playing field! Tundra celebrated her 6 th birthday on July 4 th this year. Both White Tigers, Loki and Tundra are thoroughly enjoying their habitat upgrade with sod earlier this spring. Tundra can be sassy, she likes to be the “boss” and relishes testing Loki’s patience. Tundra was also featured in TigerHomes own Educational “Power Cats” DVD. You can see her characteristics shining through right here in this photo!
As with the Sanctuary’s Golden Tigers, the White Tigers are a color variation from the standard black/orange Siberian coat. Estimates are that there are less than 200 White Tigers in existence today, all in captivity. None are known in the wild. The White Tiger is not a separate subspecies and this color morph is included in the Endangered status given to all Siberian Tigers.
