The United Kingdom also know as Great Britain consists of only 4 countries which are England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The Commonwealth Realms ( not to be confused with the Commonwealth of Nations ) is another kettle of fish altogether. The British Queen Elizabeth II is recognised as Head of State by the 15 or so independant countries ( Canada, Australia, Jamaica ect ) that still make up the Commonwealth Realms. It's all very confusing, wraped up in politics and stems back to the days of the British Colonies. It is in my opinion rather silly, pointless, outdated and should have been abolished a long long time ago.

This year we celebrate Queen Elizabeths official birthday on June 17th ( her real birthday is some time in April I think ), we normally do it at the begining of June and it's not a public holiday here though as it is always falls on a Sunday. We do have a big fancy ceromony though that is usally shown on tv. Its known as Trooping the Colour and has been celebrated for nearly 200 years.

EDIT: Sorry for going off topic.

I think upto about the middle of the 20th century all colonies that gained independance became 'realms' as a sort of default and the Queen got a special title as Head of State although she retained no power over them. It was a mandatory thing and countries didn't have much choice in the matter. Then in the latter half of the century many of the countries were basically fed up with it, stripped the Queen of ther status and fought to become republics, eventually it was changed so that all ex colonies becoming independant would become a republic instead of a realm.

I may be wrong on that as we only touched on this period of British History briefly back when I was still getting my education,. The majority of what I learnt in modern history centered on either World War 1, World War 2, The Northern Irish Conflict and also on the Palastinian/Israeli Conflict.

Laughing Laughing Laughing Im not sure how I missed this topic but with t~e adding his bit it showed up for me to finally find it and add my little bit
Well Im from Lincoln in Lincolnshire England as my profile says.
It is near the East Coast of England sort of half way up from the bottom of the country it is a very large (for england that is) county which is mainly farming so its rather flat but its ok a bit quiet but thats how I like it and also flooded in history the Magna Carta if anyone has heard of it Laughing Laughing was signed here and it was a main Roman area when they called this place there home Laughing Laughing Laughing I actually live very near a canal that was built by the Romans and if followed will take you right to the sea. That was how they transported there goods in those days.
So there you go a history lesson thrown in Laughing Laughing Laughing
But one thing at the moment it is very very wet and that is not nice at all Laughing Laughing Laughing
