Red Dawn of Canjamanjarrah

Streaks of red cross parched desert sand
The great sun rises chasing crows across sky
Shapes appear on the flat plains
Great Mobs of Kangaroos graze quietly
Dingoes circle searching for lost joey's
A cacophony of Galah sounds rise
Finches gather at a small waterhole
Miles and miles of endless plains expand to horizon

Dawn and life scrambles before sun parches
Sleepy Goanna's bask on smooth flat rocks
Small animals hurry to an only shade...conceal
Food, water and cooling shade become paramount
Natures great race for survival has little time
Soon the shimmering starts...it becomes oppressively hot
In concealed shade places and rocky hills life goes on
Sparse Trees live here and can be counted in lonely singles

Morning arrives to the Tich Tich tich of the Grass Cricket
Dawn now departs and heat rises in vaporous degrees
Red streaks fade to a lustering brilliant blue sky
All is so still where life holds its breath in the shadows
In the distance fires have been lit by the old men
They gather and prepare for the hunt...
Here is the real Australia ...where nature is still wild
Here adventure begins in the Red Dawn of the Outback

Ahhh, Antipodi...what a perfect read for a lazy Sunday morning.........took me 'outside of here'(elsewhere Wink ) once again and I LOVE IT Exclamation Very Happy

Now I have to admit to resorting to google search for Galah ( http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&um=1&hl=en&q=galah ) and for Goanna ( http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=goanna&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&um=1&sa=N&tab=wi ) as well (even though I was pretty sure on that one Rolling Eyes )

Cool COOL Exclamation Got 'away' for a bit and went on a 'treasure hunt' to boot! Laughing

Very Happy THANKS!! Very Happy

Awesome poem, Antipodi! Just to add to the searches, here are Wikipedia pages on both of those-

Arrow Galah
Arrow Goanna

I tried searching for Canjamanjarrah and Grass Cricket, but neither of those came up... of course, both of those you can just imagine when reading the poem!

Thanx everybody for the wonderful comments yes the outback of Australia is an awesome place and the so called desert is in many places just an endless(to the horizon) grassy plain with sparse trees here and there...The Nullabor Plain is an Indigenous peoples word meaning (Treeless Plain)...The Name place is imaginative (Like Echo Beach) and the Grass Crickets are my own interpretation of an insect that makes a beautiful Tich Tich Tich sound in the hot summer grass...
