Morning Fish Germungerry Downs

5am and the hot mists hovered above the Billabong
The Deafening chorus of Cicada throbbed like a heartbeat
Sleepy eyes woke slowly of a red sunrise
Somewhere a howl of a lone Dingo calling its mate
The magpie serenaded its mate in the River gum
And the Whipbird slashed the morning breeze.

I turned my head to see a big Grey munching happily in the soft green grass
Life here was paradise in my solitary campsite
I took my old canvas foldup chair and headed down to the banks of the billabong
I would have Barramundie for breakfast ...so I threw out a line
I would nap till I felt that tug..then brekkie on a stick..
Mayflies buzzed lazily around me ..I gave the Aussie salute (Damn Flies)

It is so wonderful to think my Australian Paradise still exists
I drift off in a delicious dream ..so sleepy still
Suddenly..A tug on my line..The battle between man and fish had begun
He tried to snag me , but I gave a gentle shove sideways
You are not going to outsmart me , Old man Barramundie
He fought bravely but exhausted gave in
I almost felt sorry for him, but nah, I was very hungry

I chucked him on the fire ..
mmm the delicious sizzle came to my nostrils
I would soon taste that wonderful delicious white flesh
Then ...I must up camp ..for tomorrow I must reach Bullocky Creek

A FABULOUS READ!

What an awesome way to end the night -- Thanks so much for sharing. Of course I had to look up "billabong." Cool So cool to learn the definition of a new word, and a new fish as well -- after taking a magic carpet ride on the flow of your poetic writing. Very Happy

An interesting tidbit about these fish:

"Barramundi are protoandrous hermaphrodites: they start life as males, reaching maturity at around 3 to 4 years of age and later change gender and become females, usually at around age 5. Small fish are almost exclusively male with the percentage of females increasing with overall length."

Very nice! How long did you go camping for? I remember seeing the original poem, and this one's a nice addition to it - are there more about the trip?

Thanx for your comments ...I hitchhiked all over Australia when I was younger the actual Names are ficticious but the story is composite of experiences I had on the way .....Australia truely is a Vast beautiful and sometimes still wild place with much to see ...I feel I will not even experience it all in one lifetime ther is still many places I would like to visit ...The Bungle Bungles ...Glass House Mountains...Much of The North Coast and local Islands ...Meet more of our indigenous tribes many of whom have a wealth of knowledge and history in their marvelous Dreamtime ledgends...I will post more poems on "The Out back" a place far from any City ....

Oh Antipodi - your posts are always the best in bringing us right along
with you. Feels like one is by your side waiting for the line to tug.

Such vast territory and so much rich heritage to experience there.

You tell us in stories:

Thank goodness for this earth and thank you for sharing her bounty with us.
Can't wait to find out what "Bungle Bungles" is all about and, for me, especially
your stories about the "Glass House Mountains".

Must admit that Glass House Mountains & Bungle Bungles has my curiosity spiked up as well. I do believe I'll not google those two, but instead opt for Antipodi's account. Very Happy

You hitch-hiked all over Australia! What a fantastic journey that must have been. Thanks for sharing some of those moments with us & I am very much looking forward to your next installment. Cool Love how you 'set the stage' on this one and how it passes along some tranquility. (and MAN do I need tranquility Laughing Wink )
