Just checking in on Wanda & Winky to see if pawsweb.org has made any progress in setting up the elephant cam. It's not here yet (big mission setting up cams) but there is a news statement published 05/03/05 by Paws that you may find very interesting:
http://www.pawsweb.org/site/news/newsdocs/ht_wankie.htm
Well said, Pat Derby. How true Not only do you have to love these guys for their hearts and passion for the animal's welfare but for having the guts to stand up and say what needs to be said
Remember pawsweb.org not only has Wanda & Winky in a much better place than a Zoo environment (thank you again Mr. Kagen) but they also have most of the tigers confiscated from Weinhart in their charge. Read Marla Smith's guilty plea on that one and she stated that the "Rescue" facility became a "drop-off" for sick and dehabilitated tigers and other animals. Sooo... policy was to try to nurse these animals back to health. If unsuccessful, Weinhart just killed them and then fed them to his own tigers. Makes you wonder how hard they tried to nurse them back to health What a piece of work that guy was - he still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
We need more people like Pat Derby & Dave & Jason in this world to

I, too, keep checking both the Detroit Zoo & the PAWS sites for any news about the cam.......or just news. Read up on the more recent happenings re: the Weinhart cases. Gives new meaning to the term 'human waste' don't they?
What a beautiful memoriam for Wanky. Most definately well said. And it sure does need saying LOUD & CLEAR! I salute the wonderful and caring people that have dedicated the purpose of their lives to making this world a better place for ALL of it's inhabitants. Nobody does it like Dave & Jason
Reading the Sloth Articles and the fact they are in the same family as Armadillos reminded me of something....
There is a young boy I know who lives up in Ocala. He visits here 2-3 times a year. This time he brought pictures he took of his bikes, dog and other animals he has seen in the forest to show me. He wants to be a forest ranger when he grows up now. He kept one picture back and said it was going to be very hard to show me.
OK - what is it - there is no picture you can show me that would change my life. So he put it on the table. It was a bloody mess - a young Armadillo some other kids had shot over 50-60 times with B-B-Guns.
They shot it because they didn't know what it was and they were actually scared to death of it. Thought it might have rabies or attack them and tear up their legs. One kid thought it might be some kind of dinosaur. This boy knew by one look on my face that I didn't like it AT ALL. I asked him what did you tell them. He told them he was going home to get his camera to show a lady he knows what ignorance does to the animals.
Now this is the kid who has caught the same old catfish at least 5,000 times and thrown him back. He named him & feeds him everyday after school. He learned from me at a very young age respect for nature. He knew what an Armadillo was because he saw me treat one that had been attacked by dog. Severe bites - cracks & holes all over the back hard shell area - every day for 30 days - neosporin, gauze pads & heavy duty white tape. The shell grew back and was light pink at first - when it turned dark again we left the bandage off and in a few days she left with her little baby she had kept with her into the woods by the house and they just kept right on going. He had helped me bandage her when he was only 5 years old and he knew the fact that they do not have teeth and are not aggressive creatures.
He told the other kids about Armadillos and that it would not have hurt them, and it was best just to let them go on their way. Well those kids wrapped that Armadillo up in a towel and took him on the school bus to give him to the science teacher. They wanted to know why he never taught them about Armadillos in 6 years of school. Most of the parents had never seen one either. Well they had a class on Armadillos the next day.
Education is so important in teaching respect for all of nature's creatures. Maybe the next Armadillo that ventures their way will fare a little better. Can you imagine the look on the Science Teacher's face with that towel unwrapped and those kids looking up at him wondering WHY
Moral - Never give up planting the seeds of life - they do pay off.

A very endearing story, Ace. Thank you so much for sharing that experience with us. While I am biting my tongue to avoid posting an essay on the evils of allowing young children to run rampant with guns (another time.....maybe ), this does shine a ray of hope that those kids will think a little more about the consequences of their actions and learn from it. Your young friend sounds like a very special person to know. And vice-versa. Proof positive that education is the key. _________________ "When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world." ~John Muir~ |

Well thanks Ace! That's very nice.
Eventually this Education Center "framework" will be divided into separate themed pages that will be a little more fun and friendlier to navigate. At least it's clean enough to continue adding some new stuff.
I appreciate the feedback! |

When I see the Elephant Cam - I get teary eyes - sorry cant help it.. Long awaited for these great creatures named Wanda & Winky just to name a few of them at Ark2000. Logged on a few times and all I see is the green, green grass which looks like the color of freedom finally
Oh thank God there are people like Pat Derby in this world (and TigerHomes & Dave - no show & tell here - just cams in a natural environment). Ironic - green is the color of freedom and as you can see even an organization that receives celebrity donations (Kim Bassinger auctioned off $140,000 worth of jewelry to donate to Ark2000) still has limited resources, needs financial help and isnt afraid to ask for the animals. You have to respect that. It takes courage and determination to be cut from that cloth
Remember they also have 39 rescue tigers taken from Weinhart, thank God - to feed plus the elephants. That reminds me - I have looked at the TigerHomes website pages for the "Sponsor" list which is GROWING everyday. It is so nice to see the support from all of us listed right there together
It is a start. Once Midnight's cams are up - there is the next project and the next project - don't know since we have no hints Not to mention the cost of food and 40 cams running all day EVERYDAY (except for the quirk now & then or the thunderstorms which I secretly think the Tigers order Special Delivery) so they can splash
We might take snapshots, post in the forum, cruise this incredible website but we are more than just fans folks. We have become part of something much larger than us by showing our support and really adopting these animals as if they were our own. We, Us - hey - that's You and I are part of the Sanctuary - this is our Sanctuary as much as it is the animal's. That's a pretty impressive thing to be able to say that we belong to the TigerHomes Sanctuary We care enough to make a BIG difference - no matter if we are filling up food bowls, adopting our fav or getting another cam on-line
Hands in the air for ALL of you guys and Pat Derby, Ron Kagen and Dave and Jason Let's keep on doing what we've been doing We like being spoiled
