November 2003
Is that a BALD
HEADED LEMUR?
Well it is November again, and here at the Sanctuary that
means "Lemur Breeding" season. Especially where
the Ruffed Lemurs are concerned! This is also a time when
the political atmosphere of the Ruffed Lemur habitats start
changing drastically. As discussed in previous Sanctuary
Chronicles, lemur society is primarily based on Female Dominance,
where in most cases the males are submissive to the females.
One does not have to watch the 'lemur cams' for long to notice
the males giving way to the Alfa female in the group. This
submissive behavior can be observed throughout the majority
of the year. More |

A
Hearty Thanks to the Sanctuaries Silent Partners: Our Veterinarians
David and I have decided to dedicate
the October 2003 Sanctuary Chronicle to its team of tremendously
talented Veterinarians who dedicate their time and expertise insuring the health
of its residents. We are extremely fortunate to have a team
of highly qualified veterinarians that specialize (in some
cases exclusively) in the care of Exotic Wildlife. We would
like to thank Dr. Don Harris & Dr. Marc Kramer of ?Avian
and Exotic Animal Medical Clinic?, and Dr. Tim Tristian who
is in Texas. More |

Can You
Say Server UPGRADE!
With out doubt, one of David and
I's favorite things in the world is when we improve both
the physical and mental
environments of the animals we
care for and call family. September was significant in the
fact that we TOTALLY upgraded Clarence
and Gypsy's habitat. Not like their previous habitat was
not awesome in every way. Change in habitat design is a fantastic
form of enrichment, so David and I constantly strive to make
these improvements when possible. This month we went overboard!
We relocated Clarence and Gypsy to an "Off Camera"
habitat and opened up a 20 ft
section of sidewall in their habitat. This opening aloud
us to bring in heavy equipment to not
only completely re-arrange over 12 tons of boulders, but
to carry and install some extremely large and heavy tropical
palm trees. Their environment got an "Extreme Makeover" that
even Oprah herself would be proud of. Of course we had to
polish off the makeover by adding multiple pallets of beautiful
green grass threw out. Needless to say, their habitat looks
fantastic! More |

Locked & Loaded
David and I are proud to announce that
we are in the final stages of completion of the Sanctuaries
3rd educational video, "Locked & Loaded-
Power Cats - DVD" As most of our hard-core followers
are aware, the Tiger Homes Sanctuary has embarked on a mission
to create and produce our own "Educational Video
Series". As
of now, we have created 2 videos with the 3rd in the final
stages of editing. More |

The
BRAINS Behind the Technology
Over the last few years David and I have been flooded with
positive feedback concerning the Sanctuary and its web site.
People from all over the world, from school teachers to fellow
zoological professionals, to kids have written us exclaiming
how much they love and have learned from the website. How incredible
the cams are! What beautiful habitats the animals are kept
in! How healthy and happy and enriched all the residents look.
I could literally go on and on and on detailing the positive
feedback we have received and the fact that the residents of
the Sanctuary have brought so much into the lives of our viewers.
We both pinch ourselves everyday in disbelief that we are so
fortunate not only to have the privilege of working with these
animals on a daily basis, but also have such a great platform
for sharing our interest in spreading the word of education and conservation to so many others.

We Welcome
a 3rd Generation
Dave and I are EXTREMELY "Fired
Up" to
announce the arrival of new healthy baby Black and
White Ruffed Lemur to
the list of the Sanctuary?s achievements! On June 1st at 5:30am,
Echo delivered a healthy infant. This baby represents the Sanctuaries?
3rd generation of CAPTIVE BRED infants for this endangered
species. Both David and I are beyond words in describing our
joy and happiness on this occasion. More |

We all
can make a difference
Ever since David and I decided to share the Sanctuary with
the GLOBAL public via the Tiger Homes Animal Sanctuary web
site, live video cameras and literally tons of educational
information; we have been literally bombarded with thousands
of positive e-mails from our visitors from all over the world.
We have die-hard fans from Poland, Soviet
Union, South America,
Australia, Africa, Portugal and almost every other country
you can point your finger at on a globe. Thousands of visitors
that appear to live on our cams. Constantly sending us snap
shots they have taken from the cams on a minute-by-minute basis,
almost 24 hours a day. NEVER missing the opportunity to capture
a single moment in the daily lives of our residents. It is
awesome! Dave and I, along with our Web Master (Donnie) are
planning on adding a viewer snap shot gallery and monthly photo
contest to the sites long list of features in the near future.
Our visitors have taken some truly spectacular pictures directly
from the cams, and we would like to start sharing them. More |

The
Sanctuary Reaches Out To the Zoo Magnet Program
April was an exciting month for
Dave & I because we
were able to expand the scope of the Sanctuaries goal of educating
the youth on the importance of protecting wild animals and
the places they inhabit. As some of you may be aware, the Sanctuary
has embarked on the production of its own 'Educational Wildlife
Series' of videotapes. One of our main goals is to have these
videos enter the educational area via the National school system.
So far we have had fantastic reviews from educators of all
types and subjects who were all very excited to bring our videos
into their classrooms.
This month, we were very excited
to invite Dr. Suzanne Banas the "Lead Teacher" at a local
High School and also in charge
of their Zoo Magnet Program to the Sanctuary. More

The Sanctuary
has a new addition!
David and I are extremely happy to announce the birth of
the Sanctuary's newest family member. On March 19th, 2003,
a healthy infant Ring-tailed
lemur was born to Mary,
a 4-year old female recently put on breeding
loan from the
Primate Conservancy.
As of this Chronicle, the sex
is unknown to David and I.
Being that this is Mary's 1st offspring,
we were delighted to observe that she took fantastic care
of her infant. Like
many other primates, 1st time mothers often show little to
zero maternal instincts and in some cases abandon or kill
their own offspring. Not only was this not the case with
Mary because she immediately started nursing and grooming
her infant; but the entire colony or 'Troop' took to the
infant as well. Accepting it into the Troop with zero
aggressive or antagonistic behaviors. More

The
Filming of our 3rd Educational Video
As many of you are aware from reading
our previous Chronicles, the Tiger Homes Sanctuary has embarked
on the production of
an "Educational Video Series". In the hopes that
we can instill an interest to learn and protect wildlife to
an even more diverse audience, we are creating a series of
short educational videos specifically geared towards children
and the national school system. Each of these video?s is also
accompanied with a teachers guide or curriculum filled with
projects and lesson plans. The videos will be offered to the
school system as well as on our GIFT SHOP shortly. As always
we greatly need and appreciate your support of the Sanctuary
by your donations and purchases of our GIFT SHOP items. More |

The Lemurs
Go On Vacation - Environmental Enrichment
Well, I sincerely hope that everyone
had a great New Year! This month David and I started preparing
to send some of the
lemurs on vacation. As a form of "Environmental
Enrichment," and
to give our audiences something new to look at, David and I
periodically switch animals around from one habitat to another.
This month we started to prepare the new Ring-tail Lemur troop
and the group of Red Ruffed Lemurs for a switch, or as Dave
and me like to call it, "Sending Them on Vacation". As many
of you have observed, we have been spending allot of time redecorating
both habitats with new plants, ropes, ground cover, logs, and
bamboo in preparation of the switch at the end of the month. More |
