Home Improvement - Lemur Habitats

This month was geared towards maintaning and upgrading the lemur habitats. As I am sure you can tell by watching the various 'Lemur Cams', you have noticed that both the Black and White Ruffed Lemur and the Red Ruffed Lemur habitats have undergone a change.

David and I renovated the Black and White Lemur habitat by removing and replacing all of the dead and mangled plants. Due to the fact that in addition to the four lemurs, this habitat is also home to nine iguanas and four tortoises. These reptiles constantly trample and eat the planted vegetation requiring their replacement on a regular basis.

We ended up planting lots of hibiscus and crotins which both the lemurs and the reptiles seem to relish. Once the planting was completed, we rearranged the ropes (lemur roads) and spread numerous bags of mulch. After this was done, David and I spread some white river rock creating a nice pathway.

The Red Ruffed Lemur habitat got some fresh sod and a couple new yellow flowering trees. The lemurs absolutely loved these new plants. Spending lots of time playing and jumping on them. We ended up relocating two of the Green Iguanas from the Blk.&Wht. Ruffed Lemur habitat to the Red Ruffed habitat. So if you pay close attention to the cameras, you will have the chance to observe not only lemurs, but also some large adult Sulcata tortoises and some South American iguanas.

By constantly replanting and rearranging these habitats we help insure the happiness and mental stimulation of these remarkable animals. Keep watching the cameras to see these rare animals interact in a natural setting.

Remember, there are many ways to help the cause. Here are a few.

1) Tell everyone you know about the website. By increasing the number of visitors, we increase the awareness of the danger these wonderful creatures face.
2) If you have a website, link to us - http://www.tigerhomes.org/
3) Submit our site http://www.tigerhomes.org/ to any webcam sites you may visit.
4) Make a donation to the sanctuary. There is an area on the gift shop for those who want to contribute.
5) Purchase items from the gift shop. They make great gifts and are for a worthy cause.
6) Adopt a pet. It's a great way to virtually own one of the sanctuary animals.

Remember, our main mission is to spread an interest in saving wild animals and wild places but we can't do it alone.
