News for the Month of April 2004

“Baby Ruffed Lemurs Move Back Home”

Our Baby Ruffed Lemurs, are doing great! We have been getting allot of “Web Site Questions”, asking us how the Baby Lemurs are doing, and when we will be reintroducing them back into their Web Cam habitats. Well, to answer your questions, all of the Baby Lemurs are doing fantastic. We are planning on reintroducing both Baby Black & White Ruffed Lemurs back into their main habitat with Shredder at the end of April.

As you are aware, the 3 Baby Ringtail Lemurs have always remained in their birth habitats, and on multiple Web Cams. Ruffed Lemur babies are considerably more delicate then Ringtail babies. In addition to their increased delicacy, mother Ruffed Lemurs also require a habitat that is quite with minimal distractions. It is for this reason that David and I remove inexperienced Ruffed Lemur mothers from their habitats and place them in a separate “Birthing Habitat” about 2 weeks before anticipated parturition (delivery). This helps insure the mothers’ complete attention to the newly born and extremely delicate Baby Lemurs.

Over the next few months, pay close attention to the Lemur Cams. The introduction of babies to a habitat always brings out interesting social and political behaviors. Pay close attention to the “Social Structure”, in both the Ruffed Lemur and Ringtail Lemur habitats! Remember, “Lemur Society”, is primarily based on “Female Dominance”. Keep this in mind when you observe the various behaviors. Also, take mental notes on how the two different species of Lemurs deal with the introduction of the babies, and their eventual placement in their “Lemur Social Group”.

Before I end this Chronicle, I feel I have to mention a horrible piece of news that absolutely sickens both David and myself. For the 1st time in over 20 years, Canada has legalized the clubbing deaths of roughly 50% of all newborn Fur Seals. The cruel and brutal way these Fur Seals are killed is absolutely appalling! Baby Fur Seals are clubbed and often skinned alive as their poor helpless mothers cry and desperately try to save them! Apparently the Fur Seal pelts are being sold to Russia and other countries in that region. These actions by both the Canadian Government and the barbaric Seal Hunters, defy humanity. We could write on and on about this, but just wanted to make you aware of it. If you have the time, do more research on the Internet on this subject. Maybe we all can get some kind of petition together? Who knows, just had to pass this on to you. It just sucks that in a time when the World is trying to be “Environmental”, some barbaric Government has to stoop lower then low!

Anyhow, keep on watching and learning, as I am totally sick to my stomach thinking about the brutal deaths of THOUSANDS of helpless Fur Seals to write more!

Remember, there are many ways to help the cause. Here are a few.

1) Tell everyone you know about the website. By increasing the number of visitors, we increase the awareness of the danger these wonderful creatures face.
2) If you have a website, link to us - http://www.tigerhomes.org/
3) Submit our site http://www.tigerhomes.org/ to any webcam sites you may visit.
4) Make a donation to the sanctuary. There is an area on the gift shop for those who want to contribute.
5) Purchase items from the gift shop. They make great gifts and are for a worthy cause.
6) Adopt a pet. It's a great way to virtually own one of the sanctuary animals.
