Did you know that the Elephant
Seal (Mirounga angustirostris) is the deepest diving of
all the different seal species? Elephant
Seals have been recorded to dive in excess of 2500 feet,
and hold their breath for almost 1 hour. Compare this amazing
depth to that of the Fur Seal (Callorhinus
ursinus) that dives to a depth around 700 feet and you can easily
see quite an extreme difference. Their primary food source is
deep-water squid, fish and mollusks, which would explain their
adaptation to Deep Water Diving.
I know a few PADI Certified
Divers that would be extremely jealous of these amazing Marine
Mammals. The Elephant Seal is also the Largest
Seal in the world weighing in over a ton. Baby
Elephant Seals are typically born in the winter after
a Gestation Period of
11 months. Since the Tigerhomes Animal Sanctuary obviously does
not house these Large Marine
Mammals I highly suggest you look at some Pictures
Of Elephant Seals to see how they got their name. It is
SO OBVIOUS! REMEMBER, THE TIGERHOMES
